Robot welding is a semi-automatic or automatic process that requires loading and unloading by a human operator. Welding robots are usually used for resistance spot welding and arc welding in high-production applications, such as the automotive industry.
Robots with various motion types can be used for welding. The most common robot motion type for spot welding applications is the articulated robot, which is designed to mimic the range of motion of a human arm. Other types include SCARA robots, which are best suited to operating within confined spaces, and delta robots, which have a high degree of accuracy but limited work envelopes.
Robot welders are also equipped with sensors to ensure proper operation. These may include vision systems to inspect weldments or ensure that all materials are properly loaded; force sensors to detect if there is adequate pressure on the material being welded; position sensors that measure robot positioning during operation; and touch sensors that allow for delicate operations such as screw driving.
